Prepare yourself for a grand escape at McMenamins Grand Lodge, located in Forest Grove, Oregon. It's a bit like falling down the rabbit hole with Alice, really, and a good deal more interesting to boot. It's all in the details at this place with its stately columns and winding drive, sweeping green carpet of a lawn, 77 European-style lodging rooms, multiple restaurants, and cozy, small bars, and -- truly the best part indeed -- some of the most fantastic artwork to ever grace these aged walls.
Built in 1922 as a Masonic & Eastern Star home, this place has many stories to tell. Renovated and opened by McMenamins in 2000, what was once tranquil and serene is now vibrant and active. Here the walls do speak...as do the doorways, the hallways, and indeed, even the overhead pipes. Inspired by the remarkable history of the city of Forest Grove and the building itself, McMenamins' artists have infused the Grand Lodge with a living history -- original artwork and historical photographs cover the walls, the faces of overhead pipes greet visitors with a smile and a wink, and the rooms themselves are lyrical and inspired tributes to the remarkable cast of characters who've left their footprint here.
Guests at the lodge can dine in the candlelit Ironwork Grill, or enjoy a casual meal with friends in the Yardhouse Pub. A garden-enclosed soaking pool provides inspired views of nighttime stars while the Doctor's Office Bar boasts pool, snooker, Golden Tee and a truly impressive back bar. Take in a movie in the ornate Compass Room Theater or toss a disc or two on the front lawn's 10-hole disc golf course.
Outside of the Grand Lodge itself, Oregon's dramatic Coast Range beckons with Pacific Ocean beaches just over an hour away. The vast Tillamook State Forest is less than one-half hour's drive west of town and the 1,113-acre Hagg Lake, just ten miles outside of town, features boating, water skiing and fishing. Momokawa Sake Factory and 11 celebrated wineries -- including Montinore Vineyards, Laurel Ridge and Shafer Vineyards -- offer a delicious taste of the area.
Come out and explore with us at The Grand Lodge, you'll be glad you did!
